Over 3,000 people took to the streets yesterday for the largest animal rights demonstration ever held in Israel. The demonstration was started as an Israeli-led initiative on Facebook, and turned into a global protest with 40 demonstrations simultaneously held in various cities worldwide. For the first time ever, all those acting for animals joined forces: Dog shelter volunteers, cat feeders, anti-vivisection groups and pro-farm animal organisations – as well as many caring citizens from all over Israel.

The following galleries contain images of animals who suffered gruelling, prolonged torture by humans, almost invariably in order to satisfy marginal human needs. Most of the images are difficult to watch. Yet, your suffering while viewing them, as tough as it may be, is nothing compared to the suffering of the animals shown in these images, and of hundreds of millions of others who continue to scream and suffer in the dark. Hard as it may be, it is important to view those images, since the torture portrayed in them is not a result of some spontaneous, sadistic whim. The torturing recorded here goes on day after day, hour after hour, and affects tens of millions of animals held in Israel, in a systematic and institutional way, in order to satisfy economic interests. What allows this situation to go on like this is, among other things, the way those who benefit from this torturing try very hard to hide it from us, while deceiving us through the false, idyllic images used in advertising and on animal product packaging.
